Falmouth

To defend Carrick Roads, Falmouth was where Pendennis Castle was built by Henry VIII. Blazoned as "An eagle displayed with heads and with a tower on each wing" (on the Killigrew arms), was the Falmouth seal. With the town and The Penryn River in the background, the Falmouth Lifeboat moored by the docks.

Close to Pendennis Castle and Gyllyngvase beach, Falmouth Docks railway station is the terminus. Towards Falmouth and within easy walking distance of the top of The Moor, Penmere railway station opened on 1 July 1925. As the lead title in a series of Packet Newspapers for central and western Cornwall, the Falmouth & Penryn Packet, published in 1858, is still in the town.

On Trescobeas Road, Falmouth CC play at Trescobeas ground. Amity Theatre, Falmouth Young Generation, and Falmouth Theatre Company include theatre groups that Falmouth is home to. In Falmouth harbour as well as an army in the town, during World War II the United States Navy had a large base.

From 1858, developed were Falmouth Docks, and, in 1867, (RNLI) Royal National Lifeboat Institution opened nearby the Lifeboat Station of Falmouth. Between 1689 and 1851 for over 160 years, Falmouth Packet Service operated out of Falmouth. At the town site, Falmouth University has a campus, Woodlane, and another in Cornwall's Combined Universities campus at Penryn's Tremough, which with the Exeter University it shares.

Primarily a tourist resort, Falmouth is a holiday destination. In Killigrew Street is Falmouth Methodist Church; "one of the grandest expressions of Methodism in Cornwall" is the street fa ade. Falmouth Technical College, Falmouth Marine School specialises in marine engineering, modern and traditional boat-building, marine leisure sport, and marine environmental science.

A feature of the town with art exhibitions, stage performances and an art house cinema, Falmouth has the Royal Polytechnic Society of Cornwall, the first "Polytechnic": which briefly in 2010 went into administration. In the South West Peninsula Premier League, the town has a football team, Falmouth Town F.C., who play in the town's north-west at Bickland Park, and a club for rugby union, Falmouth RFC, who play at a site at The Moor's top, The Recreation Ground.
